Ignition Coil (Spark Coil)
An ignition coil, also known as a spark coil, is an essential component of an internal combustion engine’s ignition system. It functions as an induction coil that converts the vehicle’s low battery voltage into the high voltage required to produce an electric spark at the spark plugs, which ignites the air-fuel mixture inside the engine.
Working Principle
- The vehicle battery supplies low voltage (typically 12V) to the ignition coil.
- The ignition coil steps up this voltage to several thousand volts through electromagnetic induction.
- The high voltage is then delivered to the spark plugs to initiate combustion.
Electrical Components
- Some ignition coils include an internal resistor.
- Others use an external resistor or resistor wire to regulate current from the 12V supply.
