A Current Transformer (CT) is an electrical instrument designed to convert high current levels on the primary side into lower, measurable current levels on the secondary side through the principle of electromagnetic induction. It is widely used for current measurement, monitoring, and protection in power systems.
A current transformer mainly consists of a closed magnetic core and primary and secondary windings. The primary winding has only a few turns and is connected in series with the circuit being measured, allowing the full line current to pass through it. The secondary winding contains more turns and is connected to measuring instruments, meters, or protective devices.
The operation of a current transformer is based on electromagnetic induction. When current flows through the primary winding, it generates a magnetic field in the core, which induces a proportional current in the secondary winding. This allows high current signals to be safely reduced to standard measurable levels for monitoring and protection purposes.
During normal operation, the secondary circuit of a current transformer remains closed. Since the impedance of connected measuring and protection devices is very low, the CT operates in a condition close to a short circuit, ensuring accurate current transformation and reliable performance.
